The RYA Scotland Winter Championships at Largs/ SSI in December was the final RYA Scotland event of the calendar year. This year the event was akin to a Sprint Championships, with race target times of just ten to twenty minutes. The challenge was getting the most out of light shifty conditions.
Nearly ninety boats and boards across the RYA junior and youth classes entered the event, a record number for the Winter Championships. It follows on from strong attendance over the year when two RYA Scotland events attracted over one hundred boats.
Head coaches from each class gave input to the sailors ashore and afloat. Light conditions saw many fleets start their racing on the Saturday morning, with the double handers starting later, and sailing under PY in a mixed fleet.
Three races were completed across the afternoon until the light faded leaving the double handers needing one race on the Sunday. For these sailors their hopes were met with the double handers getting in the only race of the day on Sunday morning.
Sailors of the other classes enjoyed snowball fights meanwhile, but no wind arrived, so results from the Saturday became final. Gordon Cogan-Sivarajan, Lorcan Knowles, Jamie Calder and Dugal Wilson took victory in the Optimist, Topper, Laser Radial and Laser Standard classes respectively.
Jamie Calder said, “It’s a good boost halfway through the winter, it keeps the motivation going through training.” Laser standard winner Dugal praised the “opportunities on the small course to work on positioning and modes of sailing.”
