SSI at World Youth Champs - Weymouth

The Scottish Sailing Institute was part of the team running the “yellow” race course (420 Boys, 420 Girls and Open Hobie 16 Catamaran Classes) at the recent Volvo Youth Championships. The championship was held at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy and was the first major event to be held at one of the venues designated for the 2012 London Olympics. The event was the largest ever Youth Worlds with 63 different countries taking part across 7 different classes of sailing craft.

The Team comprised two crews of mark laying personnel armed with Sportscotland National Centre Cumbrae’s RIB - complete with pot hauler that was the envy of many of the other mark layers! The team were also equipped with the expertise and all the navigation gear required to lay race courses quickly and with pinpoint accuracy. The pot hauler proved very helpful as shifty winds at Weymouth meant that there were 19 course changes in one day alone!

The event was a great success with all classes easily completing the required number of races for a series. The competitors also enjoyed a lay day which included trips on “Basilica” a Volvo Extreme 40 catamaran and Mike Golding’s Open 60 “Ecover”. The day was capped off with a fine display provided by the Red Arrows.

Team GBR had success in the Hobie 16 Class taking the Gold medal, and had many other competitors in the top ten, including Scotland’s Anna Dobson in the Girls Laser Radial Class in a very creditable ninth place overall.

Team GBR finished second behind Italy in the Volvo trophy – a competition that uses a formula system to combine the results of all the classes to determine which country tops the list.
