Largs Channel Race Area:
This race area is adjacent to the clubhouse and spectacular views of race fleets can be gained from the clubhouse balcony. This race area is in relatively protected waters and is ideal for Junior and Youth fleets and is often used when racing conditions in Race Area 2 are marginal.

The water in the Largs Channel is up to 40m deep and tides are very predictable. Tides tend to run north to south when ebbing and south to north when flooding and are in the region of 1-2 knots in strength. Tidal flow is strongest towards the south end of Great Cumbrae where the Channel narrows slightly.
North of Great Cumbrae Race Area:

This area is only 2km from the Clubhouse; it is the preferred Championship race area and offers a wide expanse (up to 8km in diameter) of undisturbed water. Normally the eastern side of the area is where courses are set, however a number of courses can be laid making it perfect for multiple fleet regattas. The water in this area is up to 90m deep and tides tend to run north to south when ebbing and south to north when flooding, with some local variation at the north end of Great Cumbrae. Tides are weak and predictable; with the maximum rate increasing systematically across the course from around ¼ knot in the west to around 1 knot in the east, and a little over 1 knot in the extreme south east of the area.
